Hairy Potter?

Daniel Radcliffe, the actor who plays Harry Potter, will be appearing soon in London’s west end play “Equus”. The boy meets horse story will have Radcliffe in the buff during quite a bit of the performance. This fact has somehow outraged a number of ‘concerned’ parents who proclaim they will boycott all of Daniels future endeavors. Perhaps someone needs to explain to these gymnophobes (people who fear nudity) that Daniel Radcliffe is not Harry Potter but is an actor who portrays Harry Potter. Harry Potter is fictional. Harry Potter is not in “Equus”, Daniel is. I guess it’s too distressing to them to have to face the fact that Mr. Radcliffe is a human being with, oh my gosh, genitalia. Since they won’t actually see “Equus”, they will be forced to imagine and fantasize about his naked body; the images searing and swirling in their heads for eternity. Therefore, to cleanse their thoughts, they must protect the children. Afterall their children may go to London and see this play and be forever damaged seeing a naked human. They may even grow up and be so sexually stunted that they will boycott all movies that feature actors that at one time appeared naked in another play or movie that they never saw.

How did these people ever have children if they are so uptight with sexuality and so traumatized by just the thought of the human body?

Harry needs to grab hold of his ‘magic wand’ and shake it in their faces admonishing, “Shame on you”.

"Early to Rise"

My latest is complete! Before I began I envisioned just a torso shot but it quickly developed into something more. The whole process flowed so easily as if it wanted to be created. What I had in mind was a simple piece with the view stopping at about the shoulders. Yet I have this compulsion to flesh out the characters in my renderings.

This new work, "Early to Rise", the original as well as prints, should become available today on my website.

It's Arrived!

...well, only two copies. My advance copies of "Summer Moved On" just arrived from Germany, home of the publisher Bruno Gmünder.

It's strange to actually have it in my hands. I had seen the entire book in a .pdf file before it went to press so I knew exactly what the layout and design would look like, but having the actual book is pretty amazing. I am happy to say that it looks great! It's really a decent size too. The images came out wonderfully and it has a really nice flow to it.

I should be getting the rest of my shipment in 3 to 5 weeks. Then I can start shipping them out. I'll be getting 350 copies. So if you want a first printing signed by me, hop over to my website and pre-order it. You'll also get a $10 gift card with the book.

P.S. Pardon my silly grin :-)

Two Movies

This past week I had the chance to cash in my gift cards and catch a couple movies, and though very different both were good films.
They both were released sometime ago, but just made it to my local movie house. "Pan's Labyrinth" is set in post WWII fascist Spain and tells the tale of a young girl who escapes her harsh reality into a sometimes equally frightening realm of fantasy.
"The Queen" is a look behind the walls of Buckingham Palace during the week just after the sudden death of Diana, former Princess of Wales. It's an interesting peak at the life of Queen Elizabeth, a life of procedure, tradition and isolation.

On The Drawing Board: Seeing the Light

With a good portion of the figures filled in, I've moved on to the background. Since I have a habit of resting my hand on the picture to steady it, as soon as I am happy with the faces/figures I start working from the top down. Granted this does not mean once an area is filled in that I won't go back to it.

I like the idea of the light hitting the wall, but I may wait and see as I complete more of the picture whether or not I will make changes to it.

Now, I admit that almost every piece I do, at some point I feel like yeah, this is my new favorite. I am at that stage with this one. But, like a mother and her children, they are all my favorites. Though, I find that feeling to be motivational. Otherwise, it would become tedious and unfulfilling.

On The Drawing Board: Intimate Couple

My newest endeavor is a romantic couple in bed. I have done of few pieces of couples being romantic, and a few of couples in a bedroom setting. But it's been since 2004's "Buds" that I've illustrated a tender moment in bed.

Again I've started with the faces. It's what sets the mood of the whole work and for me it is the most critical. If I nail the faces the rest will follow. It also creates the characters for me. They begin to develop personalites and it drives me to do a good job on the rest of the piece.

Perils of PayPal / Ego of eBay

Since I regularly list my prints on eBay, I am often asked why I don't take PayPal. Well, once upon a time I did. I even began accepting it as a form of payment on my own website. I abided by all their Terms of Service rules. One of those rules was that, I could offer PayPal as a form of payment on my website but could not accept it for items deemed 'mature'. That I had no problem with, and the few times buyers paid me with PayPal for 'mature' items I quickly declined their payment and had them pay with another method. Then one day, out of the blue, my PayPal account is frozen! The reason they give is that I sell 'mature' items on my website, and that is not allowed, despite that is NOT what their Terms of Service agreement states. What was more distressing is that I am told the decision is final and there is no appeal, my account is frozen and my funds will be held by Paypal (masters of the universe) for 6 months! What!? What kind of business is this? A hostile, no regard for it's customers kind of business, is what. I did eventually reach a partially sane employee who released my money, because they realized that what they did was wrong, but I got no apology and my account remains frozen.

Ever since eBay purchased PayPal they have tried to force it down it's users throats. They often tout the 'security' of it as a wonderful selling point. But who will protect you from PayPal? Visit www.nopaypal.com for more complaints and even worse horror stories. There is no 'protection' with that company, it's not a bank and is not regulated by the government. I am so much happier having my own merchant account and it's LESS expensive that PP.

Now eBay is planning to, what appears to be breaking anti-trust laws, REQUIRE new eBay users to get a PayPal account. PayPal is the LAST company I want having any sort of access to my bank account.

Fortunately, my PP experience forced me to get my own merchant account and thus set up my own online gallery/store. I have since reduced my use for eBay. In 2003 eBay sales accounted for nearly 70% of my income, last year it was down to 10%. I only use it now as a form of advertising to attract new customers. eBay has become more and more useless, it's a complicated behemoth, that's hard to navigate and its obsession with PayPal is nauseating.

Bottom line on why I don't use PayPal, "They are not trustworthy". When it comes to my money and yours, that's a big deal.

Wear Your Art on Your Chest

A few months ago, Strange Affections began offering T-shirts featuring my artwork. It's run by a woman named Baraka who has a great respect for the artists she works with and the customers she's reaching out to (unlike the jerks at 10Percent). They are a new apparel company out of San Francisco who believe you should wear your 'freak' on the outside! They don't just sell 'gay' themed items but all sorts of 'sex positive' images on soft, 100% Cotton T-shirts and long sleeve shirts from S - 3X. I was flattered to be asked and have licensed 3 images of mine that you can now wear, "Drenched", "Sir" and "Colors".

On The Drawing Board: An Eye Full

I've started to work on the eye candy that has caught the attention of our subway rider. I have a feeling he's thinking of something else that he rather be riding.

Not so very long ago I really avoided fabrics. Now here I am with all kinds of clothing. Denim is one of the harder textiles to capture. It's not just simply blue. Many shades and tones appear throughout. It also has worn spots and all those seems and stitching. No wonder I usually leave off the clothes entirely.

A Public Blogging

Rob and Yann, the nice guys that operate the blog, Beautiful, have done a very nice posting to promote the release of my book in Europe next month. They have been supporters of my artwork since they started 'Beautiful' back in August of 2005. I guess we share a common eye when it comes to beautiful men. I was flattered to have been featured in one of their first postings.

BEAU and the Beautiful

When I first started drawing male nudes, or rather drawing naked men (‘male nudes’ sounds so studious and classical) I wasn’t really aware of who else was doing this. Not to say that I thought I was the only one, but I had no idea who the artists were in this field past or present. It’s not something that you could research easily before the rise of the internet. Overtime I’ve had the pleasure of discovering and continue to discover the very talented community of gay/homo-erotic artists. One such artist that has stood out in my mind since I first saw his work is BEAU. There are many artists who I enjoy and who do wonderful work. But BEAU is one of the few that I would put on my ‘who inspires me’ list. I find myself not just looking at his paintings but absorbing them. His depictions are fevered and passionate. His men enjoy being men as much as they enjoy sex.

I recently got an email from the man better known as BEAU, which was, well for me, really awesome. I’ve enjoyed getting to know him a little by emailing back and forth. He’s an easy-going, down to earth (though he denies it), personable guy. I wanted to introduce you to his work if you haven’t stumbled across it on your own. A few pieces can be seen at www.eroticartcollection.com/Beau. If you have the book “Stripped” he’s in there too. He also has two books of his art published by Bruno Gmünder, “BEAUMEN” and “BEAUMEN 2”.

His upcoming third book, “BEAUPHOTOS”, will exhibit the latest evolution in his career, as you might assume, that of a photographer. He doesn’t paint anymore, a result of a bad accident five years ago. He may not have the dexterity in his hands to paint but with his eye for raw masculinity and unbridled sex I am sure BEAU’s photos will be a treat.

On The Drawing Board: Still a long (sub)way to go

Arrrrgggh, while I usually like the result and enjoy the challenge of drawing things I haven't attempted before, I often wonder what the hell was I thinking when I take on fine details with a lot of straight edges. I've been feeling that the last couple days as I've been filling in this background, the shiny interior of a subway car. I just had to do something else before I called it a night so I roughly filled in his blue t-shirt. Ahhh, big sweeping swaths of color.

"People Have The Power" - by Patti Smith (pardon the video quality)

With Bush slated to address the Nation and announce an esalation of his war in Iraq. It made me think, how can this one man still be allowed to make the decisions for 300,000,000 Americans, when he lied to start the war, and in 4 years has spent billions, cost thousands of lives only to to get us into a situation described as "grave and deteriorating". It's time to "...wrestle the world from fools".

I was dreaming in my dreaming
of an aspect bright and fair
and my sleeping it was broken
but my dream it lingered near
in the form of shining valleys
where the pure air recognized
and my senses newly opened
I awakened to the cry
that the people / have the power
to redeem / the work of fools
upon the meek / the graces shower
it's decreed / the people rule

The people have the power
The people have the power
The people have the power
The people have the power

Vengeful aspects became suspect
and bending low as if to hear
and the armies ceased advancing
because the people had their ear
and the shepherds and the soldiers
lay beneath the stars
exchanging visions
and laying arms
to waste / in the dust
in the form of / shining valleys
where the pure air / recognized
and my senses / newly opened
I awakened / to the cry

Refrain

Where there were deserts
I saw fountains
like cream the waters rise
and we strolled there together
with none to laugh or criticize
and the leopard
and the lamb
lay together truly bound
I was hoping in my hoping
to recall what I had found
I was dreaming in my dreaming
god knows / a purer view
as I surrender to my sleeping
I commit my dream to you

Refrain

The power to dream / to rule
to wrestle the world from fools
it's decreed the people rule
it's decreed the people rule
LISTEN
I believe everything we dream
can come to pass through our union
we can turn the world around
we can turn the earth's revolution
we have the power
People have the power ...

On The Drawing Board: Face Forward

My newest face is coming along. While I recently mentioned I don't contemplate the age of my 'men' most of the time. Sometimes when it's relative to the piece, I have to. For my latest I am after a youthful (but legal) look. It may be his first time in the big city, but he knows a thing or two. I am really having to explore the subtleties between childlike and adult male features all while incorporating an expression of 'trying not to be obvious as he ogles the object if his arousal'. Again, this is 'in progress' it's close but not the finished face, just sharing what I am up to and where things are at. I'll share more about the setting in the next 'On The Drawing Board' update.

First comes love, then comes gay marriage, then comes Romney to hate and disparage

As the country mourns Gerald Ford, the man who pardoned Nixon in order for the country to heal and move past the Watergate scandal, here in Massachusetts ex-Governor Romney keeps tossing gasoline on the same-sex marriage issue even though its been legalized here since 2004. He continues to push to get the issue on the ballot. Which is very inappropriate since banning same-sex marriage only affects homosexual people. Heterosexual people would not be affected.

Mit "I hate gays" Romney and all those phony 'family value' organizations that pretend to be protecting 'marriage' and 'families' are simply bigots. All they are doing is putting down, repressing others in order to feel better about themselves. Same-sex marriage hurts no one. There is no justification whatsoever to deny one segment of the population the rights to something that's granted to everyone else.

Hmmm, deny marriage to homosexual couples, what's next?
Deny driver's licenses to redheads?
Deny a public education to left-handers?

Once upon a time things equally as ridiculous, like denying the right to own property to people based on the color of their skin, or deny the right to vote if you had a vagina instead of a penis were actually laws. Yet we realised that those things were stupid, wrong and immoral. It often took wise leaders to take an unpopular stand and make those changes because the majority of the populace had not been enlightened yet. They changed those laws because it was the right thing to do, not the popular thing (at the time).

I am not sure which is worse, if a politician like Romney is just a bigot, or (according to his record it is more likely) that he is against same-sex marriage primarily because he thinks it will get him elected President.

Viva La Resolution!

Ah, pondering New Year's resolutions. This year I've actually made some. They are nothing major. One is to be less cynical. Part of that will be refraining from posting 'rants' here on my blog. I also pledge to take better care of myself, I did't want to say lose weight, or get in better shape. I think those are results not the 'action'. I'm going to eat more fresh foods and be more active. I also want to figure out a way to stress less over money. I guess one way to do that is to have more! But until that happens I just have to realise that I'm going to have good months and not so good months. I've manage to support myself with my art so far.
