Naked Injustice

FAIRFAX, Va.—As Erick Williamson sees it, being naked is liberating, and if passers-by get an eyeful while he's standing in front of a picture window, that's not his problem.

A Fairfax County judge saw it a little differently Friday, convicting Williamson of indecent exposure in a case that has raised questions about what's OK when you're in your own home.

Two women said they saw much more of Williamson than they cared to in October, even though he never left the confines of his home. He received neither jail time nor a fine but is appealing anyway, saying a larger principle is at stake.

The first woman, school librarian Joyce Giuliani, said she heard some loud singing as she left her home and drove to work. As she drove by Williamson's home, she saw him naked, standing directly behind a large picture window.

A few hours later, Yvette Dean was walking her 7-year-old son to school along a trail that runs by Williamson's home.

She heard a loud rattle, looked to her left and saw Williamson standing naked, full frontal, in a side doorway.

"He gave me eye contact," Dean said, but otherwise made no gestures toward her or her son.

As she turned the corner, she looked back at the home, in disbelief at what she had just seen. Again, she saw Williamson, naked in the same picture window.

"I think that being tried and found guilty of something like this is outrageous," Williamson said after he was convicted and sentenced.

First, what were these women doing looking in the man's windows? Don't look inside someones private home if you're afraid of what you'll see. I think the woman who called the cops only did so because her son caught her leering at Williamson so she acted indignant to cover the titillation she felt as a voyeur, and from seeing a naked man for the first time in years.

KILL the BILL

Looks like the health reform bill will include mandatory coverage and penalties for failure to give insurance companies your money. Here in Massachusetts we already have mandatory health insurance and the 1st year my minimum coverage plan increased 38% so it DOES NOT CONTROL COSTS AT ALL. I'm self employed and have to pay it all out of pocket. I'd rather spend $3000/year on my own form of health insurance, eating organic, natural & pasture fed foods rather than give it away to health insurance shareholders and executives.

Rather than pass real health care reform for the 308 million Americans (40 million of which have none at all) the Democrats who were leading the charge have watered down and gutted the plan to appease just a half dozen individuals and turned it into a tax funded subsidy program for  the 'poor struggling multi billion dollar' insurance companies.

On the 9th day of Christmas YouTube Gave to me Cute Guys Dancing

Global Damning

Those who argue against controlling carbon emissions (typically Republicans) do so because they don't "believe" it's behind global warming, or that global warming is even happening, despite melting glaciers and shrinking ice caps.

But even if you're not sure, automobiles and factories are still pumping tons of pollutants into the atmosphere every minute of every hour of every day. How can that be a good thing? Isn't that reason enough to try to limit it?

Of course as with all Republican/conservative motivations, the bottom line is self interest and profit margin, and it's much cheaper to exploit people and the planet than to give a damn.

New Release: Buck!

The only sounds he hears are the chirping of birds and the rustling of wind through the trees; the air is damp and mossy and scented of pine and a hint of smoke from the hearth. The floor planks of the small cabin creek beneath his feet. It is a beautiful day. He has no clock to watch, no emails to answer, no newsfeed to fret over, no fashion to be a slave too. It's just him and nature.

I find it strange that we live in a society that is forever developing new technologies to make our lives easier. Instead, why not just live a simpler life?

While the original is available for purchase, it is a part of my new show next summer and cannot be delivered until after my exhibit ends on July 22, 2010. Limited edition Gallery and Studio prints are also available at the Special First Day Price through Midnight ET tomorrow.

on the drawing board: exposed wood

Rendering exposed wood grain is one of those cool effects that is rather easy to achieve. Using pastel colors from darks such as burnt umber and burnt sienna to burnt orange and ochers I apply them to the area in uneven layers, so some places will be darker and others lighter. Then, with my fingers, I blend them together in the direction of the grain. Careful not to overdo it, I don't want to end up with a uniform color. Then take a charcoal pencil and draw in lines of wood grain, knots and the grooves between the planks and viola!

on the drawing board: grin and bear it

I've done blue eyes many times in my works, and though I've tried giving my guys very light blue eyes before, I usually darken them because they look a little too alien. This time I started with gray eyes and just added a hint of blue and that worked much better.

FOX 'News' Fakes it...Again.

FOXNews 'mistakenly' airs last years campaign footage to show the size of the crowds created by the Sarah Palin book tour. Oddly the script was written to suit the 'wrong' footage. Also the footage manages to hide the enough of the McCain/Palin campaign signs. FOX later apologized for getting caught in another mistake.

FOXNews also aired wrong footage a few weeks ago, showing a much larger crowd at a Michael Bachmann event, than were actually in attendance.

Tuesday, November 17, 2009

They watched in anger as the pious crowd brutalized the young men while shouting vulgarities and invoking the Almighty. It was obvious that over the centuries
the people's devotion had been perverted into this bloodlust. And they had finally had enough.

Once they saw the ropes being strung up they broke their edict, showing themselves. They could no longer wait until death had come to do their task, they would end these
atrocities now. As they descended from above, like birds of prey, some swooped the tortured youths from the clutches of their persecutors, carrying them off to safety, while
others turned their attention to the fleeing mob.

The original is on consignment with the Lyman-Eyer Gallery. While available for purchase, it will remain with the gallery for my 2010 solo exhibit in July. Limited edition Gallery and Studio prints as well as open edition Portfolio prints are available for purchase at the Special First Day Price through Midnight ET tomorrow.

on the drawing board: fine feathered friends

This is something new for me: feathers! Studying them I notice that they are ordered chaos, a perfect pattern in disarray. This is one of those times where I let the medium have a little more freedom. As long as the result looks realistically like feathers, I'm happy, rather than making sure each feather is detailed and just so.

AMA: DADT and Gay Marriage Bans are Bad Medicine

HOUSTON - The American Medical Association has agreed to join efforts to repeal the military's don't-ask-don't-tell policy.

The Chicago-based AMA also voted to declare that gay marriage bans contribute to health disparities for gay couples and their children.

The nation's largest doctors' group adopted both gay-rights policies at its interim policy meeting Tuesday in Houston.

The AMA says the don't-ask-don't-tell law creates an ethical dilemma for gay service members and the doctors who treat them.

The other measure declares that marriage bans leave gays vulnerable to being excluded from health care benefits, including health insurance and family and medical leave rights. The new AMA policy stops short of opposing the bans.

on the drawing board: flight of fancy

I was browsing through my copy of Titans, the art of Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell, and got the idea to blend that dynamic superhero vibe to an idea I was formulating for my next piece.

When people ask me where I get my inspiration, there is no simpler answer other than 'anywhere & everywhere'. Along with inspiration from Titans, the influences for this piece also include the HBO miniseries Angles in America, and primarily the atrocities carried out against gay men in countries like Iran and Iraq. I can't imagine anything more horrifying to god (if one exists) or a religious person than their religion perpetuating violence or instigating prejudice against others.

Maine Voters Strip Away Rights of fellow Americans

Tuesday, voters in Maine threw the American creed "liberty and justice for all" into the firepit when a slim majority determined who has rights and who doesn't. Apparently equality in America is a dead concept and prejudice and religious beliefs of the majority trump everything in the 'land of the free'. Whose rights shall they go after next? the blacks? the Hispanics? the Jews? the Catholics? Yours? To everyone who voted down the rights of the minority you are traitors. To go against the ideal that we are all created equal, that we all have the rights to life, liberty and THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS is so anti American you don't deserve to live in this country and enjoy the rights and protections you have.

On the bright side, the vote was very close and as those older 'narrow minded' voters (you know the ones, they still use the n-word or 'col'erds') will pass on in the next few years and take their hatefulness into hell with them.

Am I being too harsh? Eh, deal with it.

Interracial couple denied marriage license in La.

HAMMOND, La. (AP) - A Louisiana justice of the peace said he refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple out of concern for any children the couple might have.

Keith Bardwell, justice of the peace in Tangipahoa Parish, says it is his experience that most interracial marriages do not last long.

Neither Bardwell nor the couple immediately returned phone calls from The Associated Press. But Bardwell told the Daily Star of Hammond that he was not a racist.

"I do ceremonies for black couples right here in my house," Bardwell said. "My main concern is for the children." ...more.

Apparently banning marriages for same sex couples is no longer enough, some are trying to revive past discrimination. This proves the point that even if something doesn't affect you personally, or even if it's not something you believe in you must respect and support the rights of others, because who is gonna be there for you when they come to take away your rights?

on the drawing board: Merry Kiss'mas

I am working on my Christmas piece for this year. It always seems too early to think about it, but after getting a few snow flurries last night and this morning, well it seems like it IS just around the corner.

Ugly Betty's new look - new season

Awkward and fashion challenged Betty gets a slightly new look in season 4 of "Ugly Betty". It's one of my favorite shows (save me from 'reality' TV and any more crime & medical dramas...oy) and I can't wait to see what unfolds for Betty, sassy Hilda, the blossoming Justin, the bitchy twins Mark & Amanda, conniving Wilhelmina, and the Meades .

Season Premiere - "The Butterfly Effect," Friday October 16th 8/7c
Betty gets to run her own Mode photo shoot at the United Nations to promote their anti-malaria initiative, "Nothing but Nets," but her big opportunity becomes a baptism by fire when Daniel's neediness takes its toll, and Matt openly demoralizes her. Meanwhile, Amanda does some soul-searching when she bonds with Daniel's new temp, Helen (Kristen Johnston), a career receptionist as fabulous as Amanda is. Wili makes it her personal mission to protect a loved one, and Hilda reaches out to Marc to figure out how to help Justin.

New Release: "Exposure"

Make up, hair, lighting. All the focus is on the subject during a photo shoot. But as with any artistic expression, a photographic portrait not only gives exposure to the model out front but reveals much about the man behind the lens as well.

Celebrity photographer Mike Ruiz has worked with everyone from Kathy Griffin, Dolly Parton and Tyra Banks to Lindsay Lohan, The Jonas Brothers and Zac Efron, and has appeared on RuPaul's Drag Race and Canada's Next Top Model. He saw and liked my work and asked if I would be interested in doing a portrait of him, that he would use to promote himself as well as my artwork. It not only sounded like a good opportunity but fun as well!

While the original is already sold, limited edition Gallery and Studio prints are available for purchase at the Special First Day Price until Midnight ET tomorrow.

on the drawing board: up close and personal

With a few good solid days of working on the portrait, it's really starting to come together. Mike Ruiz saw the last in progress posting of his portrait and said "Wow! That already looks awesome!" Which is great to hear. It's a very different feeling working on a commission, because I'm not the only one I have to please, add to it that it is a portrait too and I realize why it is I don't do very many. I couldn't handle the pressure doing them all the time.
