Heath Ledger - 28, found dead

NEW YORK - Heath Ledger was found dead Tuesday in a Manhattan apartment, naked in bed with sleeping pills nearby, police said. The Australian-born actor was 28.

There was no obvious indication of suicide, NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said.

It wasn’t immediately clear if Ledger had committed suicide. He had an appointment for a massage at the residence in the tony neighborhood of SoHo, NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said. A housekeeper who went to let him know the massage therapist had arrived and found him unconscious at 3:26 p.m.

Ledger was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in Brokeback Mountain in 2006. He was in the midst of filming The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. The actor recently wrapped filming the Batman Returns sequel titled The Dark Knight, in which he played The Joker. That film is currently in post-production.

Very sweet of you to pay tribute to this talented young actor. I respected the fact that he seemed to be humble despite his success and he appeared to be a gentle soul. His comment in an interview that I read saying he was very proud to play the role of a gay man in Brokeback Mountain and it gave him the courage and dignity to do and face anything further in life. He said he hoped it promoted awareness that homosexuality does and always has existed throughout a variety of cultures and man types and he hoped it opened many minds to the promotion of human rights and equality for all. Peace to his soul and his family and thanks for mentioning this loss of talent and warm spirit in a world that is filled with turmoil and confusion.
