Because I don't recreate the exact scene I am painting in real life to use as a guide, much of what I do is guess work and extrapolation. I know the basic principles of light, color, shadow, reflection so I try my best to apply that as I need it. It' may not be 100% correct but as long as it looks about right I'm happy with that. I can always use the excuse that their is another light source or element out of view that is affecting the figures.
